Every week I get the same question from guests who are about to fly in: what do I actually need to pack? The honest answer is that it completely depends on when you are coming. Alanya in March and Alanya in August are two completely different experiences. I have been here four years and I still see tourists arrive in July wearing jeans and a hoodie, looking absolutely destroyed by noon. This guide goes through every month of the year so you know exactly what to bring and what to leave at home.

Izabella's note: One thing that catches almost everyone off guard: sunscreen in Turkey is expensive. I mean genuinely expensive compared to what you pay at home. Bring your own from Poland, Germany, the UK, wherever you are coming from. It will save you money and it will save you a nasty burn on day one.

March & April · 18–25°C

What to Pack for Spring in Alanya

Spring in Alanya is genuinely pleasant. Temperatures sit between 18 and 25 degrees and you can usually swim, though some weeks bring longer rainy stretches that catch people off guard. A t-shirt handles most of the day but a thin cardigan or light jacket makes a real difference in the evenings or if the rain comes in. Do not overpack for warmth but do not assume it will be hot either. It is the kind of weather where being slightly prepared beats being confident.

👕 What to Wear

T-shirts and a thin cardigan or light hoodie. You will not need a coat but evenings can feel cooler than you expect after a warm afternoon. Comfortable walking shoes are more useful than sandals this time of year.

🎒 What to Bring

Swimwear just in case, sunscreen from home, a light waterproof layer if you have one. Do not waste luggage space on heavy jumpers.

Best Tours for March & April

Spring is one of the best times for this. The mountains are green, the air is clear, and you are not being cooked alive in the back of a jeep. Ideal temperatures for an off-road day.

If it turns into a rainy week, a proper hamam session is exactly the right call. Warm, relaxing, and a genuinely memorable experience at any time of year.

No license needed and the spring weather makes the trails far more enjoyable than in midsummer. Good for couples and groups who want something active without the heat.

May & June · 22–30°C

What to Pack for Early Summer in Alanya

This is when Alanya really opens up. Temperatures are between 22 and 30 degrees and the sea is genuinely warm enough to swim in properly. It is hot but not in the way that July is hot, so you can still walk around comfortably in the middle of the day if you are sensible about it. Leave the jacket at home entirely. You will not need it. What you will need is sunscreen, more t-shirts than you think, and decent sandals. Sunscreen especially: the Turkish sun at this time of year is strong, and as I mentioned, buying it here is not cheap.

👕 What to Wear

Light summer clothes, plenty of t-shirts, shorts, dresses, swimwear. No jacket, no cardigan, no heavy shoes. The lighter the better.

🎒 What to Bring

Sunscreen from home. This is not optional. Hats and sunglasses. Water bottle. Avoid midday sun on long walking tours if you can help it.

Best Tours for May & June

June on the water is perfect. Not overcrowded yet, sea temperature is just right, and the whole day feels easy. One of my favourite months to do this tour.

Good temperatures for a full-day outing. Not too hot to enjoy the outdoor parts of the trip and the kids are not going to melt. Book early in the day.

The water park season is properly open and the queues are not yet at their July worst. If you are going with children, May or June is the smartest time to visit Land of Legends.

July & August · 28–36°C

What to Pack for Midsummer in Alanya

This is serious heat. Between 28 and 36 degrees with very high humidity, which means clothes stick to you constantly and you sweat through everything by mid-morning. Pack more t-shirts than you think you need and go for loose, light fabrics rather than anything fitted. Staying outside for extended periods at midday is genuinely not a good idea, so plan your days around that. Start early, rest at lunch, go out again in the late afternoon. And drink water constantly. If you have young babies or toddlers, be very careful with sun exposure. The UV at this time of year can burn baby skin within minutes.

Izabella's note: July and August are when I see the most people getting into trouble with the sun. Adults who forget to reapply, children who fall asleep on the beach. Bring a high SPF from home, apply it properly, and put a hat on the kids every single time you go out. It sounds obvious but I see it go wrong every week.

👕 What to Wear

Loose, light fabrics. Lots of t-shirts. Avoid anything tight or synthetic. Linen and cotton make a significant difference. Flip flops and breathable sandals. Swimwear for every day.

🎒 What to Bring

High SPF sunscreen from home. A hat you will actually wear. A reusable water bottle. Nothing heavy. If you are bringing a jacket for the plane, leave it in the apartment the entire time you are here.

Best Tours for July & August

Being on the water is the best place to be in midsummer. The sea breeze keeps things bearable and you are in and out of the water all day. One of the most sensible choices for July and August.

The canyon is significantly cooler than the coast in summer. If you want to get out of the heat and actually enjoy being outdoors, this is one of the best options in August.

Go early in the morning before the heat peaks. The experience itself is not long but the transfer can feel warm in summer, so book the earliest available slot.

Rafting, quad safari, and zipline in one day. The water keeps you cool and the activity level means the heat actually feels like part of the adventure rather than a problem.

A water park in 35 degree heat makes complete sense. This is peak season for Land of Legends and it shows, so go prepared for crowds and book your transfer in advance.

September & October · 19–28°C

What to Pack for Autumn in Alanya

Honestly? These are my favourite months in Alanya. The impossible heat is over, the sea is still warm and very swimmable, and the town is calmer. Between 19 and 28 degrees is just a very comfortable range for doing everything. You can walk, take a full-day tour, eat outside at night, and not feel destroyed by it. Pack mostly summer clothes but throw in a thin jacket for evenings. You will use it toward the end of October.

👕 What to Wear

Summer clothes for daytime, a thin jacket for evenings. The sea is still perfectly warm so bring swimwear. October evenings can feel noticeably cooler so having one warmer layer is worth it.

🎒 What to Bring

Sunscreen still needed, especially in September. Comfortable walking shoes alongside sandals. A light jacket that folds down small takes up no space and will be used.

Best Tours for September & October

As the evenings cool down, a hamam session feels exactly right. Autumn is actually one of the best times for this. No sweating before you even get there.

Comfortable temperatures make this a very different experience compared to the summer months. The trails are still in great condition and you are not baking inside a helmet.

September and October are genuinely ideal for a buggy day. You get full enjoyment out of the drive without the heat making everything harder than it needs to be.

November & December · 11–23°C

What to Pack for Late Autumn and Early Winter in Alanya

November is still partly beach weather, especially in the first two weeks. December is winter. Something I find amusing every year: when it is 15 degrees here, visitors from northern Europe are often walking around in t-shirts because it feels warm to them. Meanwhile every local is in a coat and scarf. The temperature range is wide so pack for layers. A couple of t-shirts will not go to waste but your main wardrobe should be proper autumn and winter clothing.

👕 What to Wear

Layers. A warm jumper, a proper jacket, long trousers. A couple of t-shirts for warmer afternoons. Comfortable closed shoes, not sandals.

🎒 What to Bring

A waterproof outer layer is useful for November. December can bring real rain. Sunscreen is largely unnecessary by this point but a lip balm and hand cream will get some use.

Best Tours for November & December

This is when the hamam really earns its place. Cold outside, warm inside, and you leave feeling completely different. I recommend this to everyone who visits outside of summer.

The mountains in autumn and early winter have a completely different character. Quieter, more dramatic, and no overheating. Dress in layers and it is a great day out.

Still running in November. The trails are quieter and if you dress properly for it, the cooler temperature honestly makes the quad experience more enjoyable not less.

January & February · 1–17°C

What to Pack for Winter in Alanya

This is proper winter. Swimming is not happening. Temperatures can drop to single digits at night and rarely get warm enough during the day to feel like a holiday in the southern European sense. Locals are in heavy coats. I know that for some visitors 15 degrees feels pleasant but the wind coming off the mountains in January is cold, and the nights are genuinely cold. Pack winter clothes. You will not regret it.

👕 What to Wear

Warm coat, jumpers, long trousers, proper closed shoes or boots. Layers are the approach. Do not rely on the idea that Turkey means warmth in January.

🎒 What to Bring

A waterproof jacket. Gloves and a scarf are not overkill for evenings. If you are hiking or doing any outdoor tour, proper footwear matters more in winter than any other time.

Best Tour for January & February

In January and February there is really one experience that makes complete sense in every weather condition, and this is it. Warm, relaxing, and something you absolutely cannot do the same way at home. I send every winter visitor here without hesitation.

Common Questions

What to Wear in Alanya: Questions I Get Asked Every Week

Is sunscreen really that expensive in Turkey?

Yes. A decent SPF 50 in Alanya can easily cost three to four times what you would pay at home. Bring your own. I cannot stress this enough.

Do I need to cover up visiting mosques or local areas?

If you are visiting a mosque, yes. Shoulders covered and something over your legs, with shoes you can remove easily. For general sightseeing and markets around Alanya, typical tourist clothing is completely fine.

What shoes should I bring?

In summer, sandals and flip flops handle most days. If you are doing any jeep safari, quad, or canyon tour, bring one pair of closed, comfortable shoes. In spring and autumn, add walking shoes to the mix. In winter, proper footwear is more important than anything else you pack.

Can I buy clothes in Alanya if I forget something?

Yes, Alanya has a very active bazaar and plenty of shops. Summer clothing in particular is easy to find at reasonable prices. Specialist items like quality sunscreen or branded sportswear are harder to find and expensive, so those are worth bringing from home.

What should I bring for a boat tour or pirate boat?

Swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, and a change of clothes for after. The boat gets warm but the sea wind can feel cool, so a light layer for the trip back is not a bad idea. Leave valuables at the hotel.
