I've spent 25 years on the Mediterranean. I've inspected more boats than I can count, sailed these waters in every season, and answered this question more times than I remember: is the sea safe here? This is my honest answer not a marketing pitch, just what I know from a lifetime on the water.

Part 01 / 05

How Safe Is the Sea in Antalya, Alanya and Turkey?

Let me be direct: Antalya, Alanya, Side, Belek and Manavgat are among the safest coastal destinations in the world when it comes to marine wildlife. This isn't tourism talk it's a professional assessment from someone who has worked these waters for 25 years.

The Turkish Mediterranean is calm, warm, and exceptionally clear. The vast majority of marine life you'll encounter is entirely harmless. In all my years at sea, I have never once felt threatened by anything in these waters and neither should you.

There are a couple of things worth knowing about not to alarm you, but because good information is better than surprises. In October and November, jellyfish can appear occasionally in the Mersin direction. In Antalya and Alanya they are rare even then, and they are not lethal but contact can sting, so it's worth being aware of the season. The other creature occasionally seen close to rocks is the pufferfish (balon balığı). If you touch one, the spines can cause a serious reaction. But I want to be clear: encounters are extremely rare. In a normal holiday swim, you are extremely unlikely to come across either.

One thing I always mention that has nothing to do with animals: the Mediterranean has a very high salt content. If you have any sensitivity to salt skin conditions, for example take note of that before spending long hours in the water.

Other than that? Get in the water. Relax. The sea here is yours to enjoy.

Kemal's note: Antalya, Alanya, Side, Belek and Manavgat are recognised globally as among the safest beach destinations for marine safety. I say this not as a slogan I say it because after 25 years on these waters, I genuinely believe it.

Part 03 / 05

Is the Sea in Turkey Safe?

Turkey's territorial waters and specifically the Antalya coastline contain no predatory fish species. This is simply the reality of the Eastern Mediterranean. The ecosystem here is dominated by small, non-threatening marine life. You may occasionally encounter a creature that is mildly worth being cautious around, but encounters are rare and the word "dangerous" doesn't honestly apply to the sea here.

Every beach along the Turkish Riviera from Antalya to Alanya is safe to swim. I would send my own family into these waters without a second thought. That should tell you something.

Kemal's note: Twenty-five years on these waters. Not once have I felt unsafe in the sea. Swim with confidence.

Part 04 / 05

Are There Sharks in Turkey?

No. Not in any meaningful sense.

You may have seen headlines. I know the ones. A 50-centimetre juvenile shark is spotted 100 kilometres from the Turkish coast, and by the time it reaches the news it sounds like something from a film. That's how media works. It is not how the sea works.

In 25 years at sea on tour boats, commercial yachts, port operations up and down this coastline I have never once seen a shark. A few colleagues over the years have mentioned spotting a small one, far from swimmers, clearly lost. Not a threat. Not a species that belongs in these waters in any significant way.

Turkey is not a shark destination. It never has been. Swim without worry.

Kemal's note: If I were afraid of sharks, I would have changed careers 24 years ago. The fact that I haven't should be answer enough.

Part 05 / 05

Are There Dolphins in Alanya?

Yes and this is the part I genuinely enjoy talking about.

The Antalya coastline is a seasonal transit route for dolphins. They pass through, they play, and if you're on the water at the right moment you'll see them. Not threatening, not dangerous extraordinary. Dolphins are among the most intelligent creatures in the sea, and they are curious. When we pass on the boat, they sometimes race alongside us. I've been doing this for 25 years and it still makes me stop what I'm doing and watch.

If you want to see dolphins in a more guaranteed setting, we also offer a dolphin show experience with transfer included a great option if you're travelling with children.

Common Questions

Sea Safety in Alanya: Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to swim in Alanya?

Yes, completely. Alanya's beaches are among the safest swimming destinations in the world. There are no predatory species in these waters. The sea is calm, warm, and clear throughout the summer season.

Are there jellyfish in Alanya?

Occasionally, in October and November and far more common further east toward Mersin than here in Alanya. When they do appear, they are not lethal, but contact can sting. Outside of late autumn, jellyfish are rarely seen on the Alanya coastline.

Are there sharks near Alanya or Antalya?

No. In 25 years working these waters professionally, I have never seen a shark. The occasional media story is almost always about a small juvenile spotted far from the coast. Turkey is not a shark habitat.

What is a pufferfish and should I be worried?

The pufferfish (balon balığı) is occasionally found in Turkish waters. If handled or touched, its spines can cause a serious reaction. That said, encounters during a normal beach swim are extremely rare. Don't touch unusual fish near rocks that's the only precaution needed.

Can I see dolphins in Alanya?

Yes. Dolphins pass through the Antalya coastline seasonally and are sometimes spotted from our boats. You can also book the dolphin show in Alanya for a guaranteed experience with transfer included.

Is the Mediterranean saltier than other seas?

Yes. The Mediterranean has a higher salt concentration than the Atlantic or most other seas. For most swimmers this makes no difference you float more easily. If you have sensitive skin or known salt sensitivities, it's worth being aware of before long hours in the water.
