I tested this one for a specific reason. I have a fear of heights. Not the kind you push through easily the real kind. I thought paragliding might fix it. It didn't. I'm still afraid of heights. But I did it, it was genuinely unforgettable, and if you're standing in Alanya wondering whether it's worth it this is my honest account of exactly what happens.
Part 01 / 03
From Cleopatra Beach to 700 Metres: What the First Hour Looks Like
You meet at the pickup point on Cleopatra Beach. There's a short briefing nothing complicated, but pay attention and then you get into the vehicles. The drive up is part of the experience. The mountain road climbs steadily and by the time you reach the launch platform you're at 700 metres above sea level.
Then you meet your pilot. I want to be clear about this: the pilots are good people. Relaxed, friendly, professional. If you're anxious say so. They'll talk you through it properly. Nobody is going to rush you or laugh at you for being nervous. I was nervous. They handled it well.
You get harnessed in. You're at the front, the pilot directly behind you. And then comes the moment you've been building up to.
Can's note: If you have any anxiety about heights, tell the pilot before you get harnessed not at the edge of the platform. They have ways of making the approach easier. Waiting until the last second doesn't help anyone, including you.
Part 02 / 03
The First Minute, the Next Twenty, and the Part I Wasn't Expecting
You run. Fast, toward the edge of the mountain. And then you're off it.
That first minute is pure adrenaline. There's no other word for it. You've just launched off a mountain face with nothing under your feet and the sea is in front of you and the Taurus range is behind you and your brain is trying to process all of it at once. I don't think I've experienced anything quite like that first sixty seconds. I won't forget it.
Then it settles. The adrenaline eases and something else takes over a kind of quiet. 700 metres up, no engine noise, no traffic. Just the Mediterranean below you and the coastline stretching out in both directions. The view from that altitude is genuinely something else. Photos don't capture it properly, though they do take photos and videos during the flight and they come out well.
About twenty minutes in, as you're beginning the descent, my pilot asked: "Do you want some more adrenaline?" Against my better judgement, I said yes. He took us into spirals over the sea five minutes of sharp, fast turns at altitude. I've done multiple paragliding flights since. I've never said yes to that again. But for your first time? Try it. It's remarkable.
Can's note: The spiral manoeuvre is optional. You don't have to say yes. But if it's your first flight and you want the full experience say yes once. You can always decide never again after that. Which is exactly what I did.
Part 03 / 03
The Landing and Whether It's Worth It
You land back on Cleopatra Beach the same place you started. It's a soft platform landing and you walk the last few metres in. The whole thing from briefing to landing is around an hour.
Is it worth it? Yes. Unreservedly. Whether you're an adrenaline seeker or someone with genuine fear of heights there's something up there that's hard to replicate anywhere else. I still don't like heights. But I'm glad I went.
Can's note: I've tested a lot of experiences in Alanya over 11 years. Paragliding is one of the few I'd describe as genuinely once-in-a-lifetime, not as a marketing phrase but as an honest assessment. The combination of altitude, silence, and that coastline view doesn't come together like this anywhere else I've tested.
